New faces at Totterdown's award-winning chippie

NEW FACES have taken over at one of South Bristol’s best-known fish and chip shops.

Farrows in Wells Road, Totterdown, is now owned and run by Chris Reed and Sam Nakoura.

Under founder John Farrow, the traditional chippie has won lots of awards in the last 20 years, scoring highly in the annual Bristol Post fish and chip shop reader vote, finishing in the top five of the South West Fish & Chip Shop of the Year 2011, and winning a 2011/2012 Fish & Chip Quality Award.

John Farrow is literally sailing off into the sunset – aiming to spend time sailing his own boat, which he’s built himself, around Europe.

Meanwhile Chris and Sammy aim to build on the shop’s good name with some innovations.

In the coming weeks the premises will be redecorated and the menu will be revised, with more sustainable fish on offer and more locally sourced food. Chris is also looking at replacing the use of palm oil for frying, which has been linked to deforestation in the developing world.

Both the new managers have a long history in the frying trade. Chris started work as a teenager in Mr Crispins, further up Wells Road in Knowle, and later moved to Crispies in Whitchurch.

More recently Chris opened Salt & Malt, the upmarket fish fryer in Cargo 2, Wapping Wharf, for Michelin-starred owner (and South Bristol resident) Josh Eggleton.

Sammy was recruited from Crispies, where he has been frying for eight years.

Chris said the aim is to show that Farrows’ reputation is in safe hands while improving the quality further.
